 Statement of Purpose

 

Lots Of Tots Day Nursery is a long established day Nursery providing a fully bilingual (Welsh/English) care provision, in a loving and happy environment for boys and girls of all Nationalities between the ages of 0 to 8 years of age,  This includes children with Special Needs for whom we have specialist nursery staff.

The welfare and well-being of the children placed in our care is of paramount importance, and we take great care to ensure that we provide a warm, safe and caring environment in which each individual child’s needs and requirements are catered or, dietary physically and mentally.

The health and safety of each individual child in our care is our prime concern at all times. Children are ALWAYS supervised at Lots Of Tots and, in accordance with our Health and Safety Policy, not only are all outside doors kept locked at all times, but access through inner doors is by using security keypads.

Aims of the Nursery:    

  • To provide affordable, accessible quality childcare    
  • To create a safe, caring and stimulating environment where each child can develop their potential whilst becoming independent, active learners
  • To provide clear boundaries in terms of acceptable behaviour, develop children’s moral understanding and use   encouragement and praise as rewards for good behaviour
  • To build each child’s self-esteem together with mutual care and respect for others
  • To value each child as an individual with his/her own needs and personality
  • To encourage a positive attitude with respect towards racial origin, religion, difference in gender and disability within the nursery environment by practising our Equal Opportunities Policy
  • To ensure the health and wellbeing of all children in our care and to actively promote the concept of health, wellbeing and sustainability to parents.

Opening Hours:

Lots Of Tots is open from 7.45 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

We are closed at weekends, Statutory Bank Holidays and between Christmas and the New Year.

Staffing:

We are fortunate in that we have a very low turnover of staff, who are all highly qualified and experienced and we are able to meet and even exceed our staffing ratios at all times.

              0 – 2 years:       1 member of staff to 3 children

              2 – 3 years:       1 member of staff to 4 children     

              3 – 5 years:       1 member of staff to 8 children

              5 – 8 years:       1 member of staff to 8 children

Lots Of Tots implements and adheres to strict recruitment policies and procedures for all staff.

We currently have eight members of staff all with enhanced CRB checks.

The Nursery Manager and Deputy Nursery Manager hold Level 3 Qualifcations in Childcare

Three of our Nursery Assistants are currently working towards Level 3 qualifications

The remainder of our staff hold Level 2 Childcare Qualifications.

All staff hold current Paediatric First Aid and Food Hygiene Level 2 certificates.

Continuing developmental training is in place to keep up with the ever-changing legislation and procedures relevant to the childcare industry.

The Nursery is registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) and we are registered to care for up to 46 children as listed:    

               

             0 – 2 years:     12 children     

               2 – 3 years:     16 children      

               3 – 5 years:       6 children     

               5 – 8 years:     12 children

 

The After School Club

Caters for 8 -11 year olds.

Monday – Friday   3.30pm until 6.00pm

Facilities:

Lots Of Tots Nursery comprises a number of rooms which are designed specifically for the needs of the varying ages of children as follows:  

Under 2’s Room:      

This is divided into appropriate sections for children aged between 3 months and up to 2 years. There is a separate sleeping area.

Over 2’s Room:        

For children between the ages of 2 and 5 years.

After School Room:

This has recently been completely refurbished and significantly increased in size by creating one new large room out of two. One section is devoted exclusively to 'messy play' with sink unit area and washable flooring, whilst the carpeted area is suitably furnished for educational play/schoolwork.

 Additional facilities that the Nursery offers are:

  • Separate toilet facilities for the children
  • Outdoor play area equipped for outdoor activities in any weather ·      
  • Large, safe onsite car parking area for dropping off and collecting children

Activities Offered:

Lots of Tots provides a wide variety of equipment and educational toys suitable for every stage of your child’s development, including computers where the children can play educational games and be encouraged in learning computer skills from an early age. We have a separate area for messy play, i.e. water, sand, playdough and painting. We also have an outdoor play area with swings, sandpit, roundabout and a variety of gardening and other activities.

The Nursery adopts a different Theme each term and a weekly plan is displayed in the Nursery which includes activities that revolve around the Six Areas of Learning

 

Registration:

In order to register your child with our Nursery, a Registration Form needs to be completed which includes all information about your child such as medical history, vaccinations, special dietary requirements, next of kin etc. We always recommend that each newly registered child is given a settling-in period in order to ensure that he/she will be happy to attend the Nursery. We encourage parents to stay with their child during this settling-in period or, if they prefer, they can have a cup of coffee or tea in the café, yet be on hand if needed.

When registering your child with Lots Of Tots, the Nursery Manager will advise you whether there is room available for your child at the times and days requested. If there is no room available upon registration, your child will be placed on our waiting list and you will be notified as soon as a place becomes available.

 A Registration Fee of £10.00 is payable upon completion of the Registration Form.

Meals:

The meals, including snacks, provided for your children are both healthy and nutritious and we cater for both vegetarian and other forms of dietary requirements.

Breakfast is served between 7.45 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. (toast or cereal) with a midmorning snack of fruit or toast at 10.00 a.m. Lunch is provided daily, served between 11.45 a.m. and 12.00 noon inclusive of a dessert and drink. A copy of our three-weekly menus is displayed in the Nursery for all to see.   An afternoon snack is provided at 2.00 p.m. with a light tea being provided at 4.00 p.m.

Lots Of Tots also welcome parents providing packed lunches and snacks for their child as an alternative to the meals provided.

Terms of Payment:

All bookings are taken in advance and the childcare package that you have registered for your child must be paid for even though your child may be absent during any of the booked sessions. All payments must be made in advance of your registered sessions and if for any reason you need to make a change to your booking, we do require 2 weeks notice. Regular Invoices are issued in advance covering your contracted sessions as per the Registration Form and should additional extra hours or food be taken, these will be invoiced in arrears.

 

Collection of Children:

 Under no circumstances will the Nursery staff allow your child to be collected from the Nursery by any unauthorised person and it is important that details of all persons authorised to collect your child are provided on the Registration Form. If, however, none of the authorised persons are available to collect your child on any occasion, then prior notice must be given to us.   We request that all children are dropped off and collected within the Nursery opening times.

 

 

Child Illness/Medication:

 We request that you do not bring your child to the Nursery should they be ill or feel unwell. In the event that your child should become ill during the day, the Nursery staff will comfort your child and inform you as soon as it is necessary to do so. If we inform you that your child is unwell we ask that you make arrangements to collect your child as soon as possible.

 Nursery staff are unable to dispense medication unless the appropriate paperwork has been completed and signed. Details of any regular mediation that your child takes must be included in the Medication Section of the Registration Form. Any changes to your child’s medication must be made in writing to the Nursery Manager.

Should your child contract an infectious illness, we request that you immediately notify the Nursery Manager. If you are not sure whether a specific illness is infectious, please contact the Nursery Manager for guidance.

 

Healthy & Sustainable Pre-School Scheme:

 Lots Of Tots is a member of the Healthy and Sustainable Pre School Scheme the main aims of which are to ensure we maintain a high standard of:

  • Nutrition & Oral Health
  • Physical Activity/Active Play
  • Mental & Emotional Health, Wellbeing and Relationships
  • Safe, hygienic environment in the workplace

 

Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme:

We participate in the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme whereby mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their baby on our premises.

 

Toileting Provisions:

Parents/guardians are asked to supply nappies, wipes and creams for their children ensuring that the Nursery has a sufficient supply at all times. If required, we are able to keep individual stocks in the Nursery for your child and advise you when they are running low.

Nappies are always changed when required, but it is suggested that you leave spare set of clothes at the Nursery for your child in case of an accident!

When your child is ready to be toilet trained we will always discuss each individual child’s toilet training needs with the parent/guardian and our nursery staff will be happy to provide guidance and advice on toilet training routines.

 

Policies and Procedures:

 Lots Of Tots Policies and Procedures are kept in a folder located at the entrance of the Nursery, and are also displayed on our website, available for you to read through at your convenience.

Amongst our Procedures is a Complaints Procedure (see Appendix B) but should you have any concerns or complaints we would ask that you speak to our Nursery Manager in the first instance. Should there be any concern or complaints these will belistened to, taken seriously at all times and if necessary, the appropriate remedying action taken.

 Whilst your child is attending the Nursery, there will be times when they might be photographed, i.e. at Summer Fetes, fund raising days, Christmas parties etc.   If you do not wish your child to be included in any photographs we ask that you put this in writing to the Nursery Manager, otherwise we will assume that we have your permission.

 

Arrangements for Dealing with any Emergency:

We do have an Emergency Procedures Policy in place (see Appendix C).

Cancellation of Contract:

Should you wish to remove your child from the Nursery, one month’s notice in writing is required.

Appendices:

ADMISSIONS POLICY - Appendix A

  1. 1.All parents who wish their child/children to attend the nursery are required to fill in a detailed Registration Form.
  1. 2.If the start date for commencement of childcare with the nursery is for a future date, and the child/children has/have been placed on our Waiting List, Lots of Tots will contact the parents three weeks before the intended starting date to:
  1. a.Advise whether or not the child can be offered a definite place and
  2. b.To confirm that the parents still wish the child to join the nursery
  1. 3.Numbers of children taken into Lots Of Tots Day Nursery will be strictly regulated so that the maximum numbers for which we are registered with the CSSIW for the varying age groups is not exceeded.
  1. 4.Prior to the child’s attendance at the nursery, the parents/guardian must complete and sign one copy of the ChildCare Contract which they have been given, together with Parents’ Handbook. The Contract, in conjunction with the previously completed Registration Form provides Lots Of Tots with the following vital information:
  • Name, home address, and date of birth of each child
  • Starting date and number of required sessions per week
  • Arrangement for payment of fees
  • Name, address, home telephone number, mobile telephone number and email address of parents/carers/guardian as appropriate
  • Parental Consent on emergency procedures, where we are unable to contact a parent – i.e. Name, address, home telephone number, and mobile telephone number of grandparent, other relative or named person
  • Any special dietary requirements
  • Details of any allergies
  • Arrangements for collection
  • Name, address and telephone number of the child’s doctor
  • Full details of any illness and inoculations
  1. 5.Parents/Carers/Guardians will also be asked to provide the nursery with any further information which they feel will enable us to take the best care of their child/children. This should include particular likes/dislikes in bottle feeding habits, dummy use,Daytime sleeping patterns should also be written down, together with any ways which the parents find successful in getting the child to sleep if there are difficulties.

 

 

POLICY ON COMPLAINTS – Appendix B

 

 

 

It is clearly of paramount importance that the Nursery should run smoothly and that all parents and staff work together in a spirit of co-operation in the children’s best interest. In the event of complaints from either staff or parents, every effort will be made to respond quickly and appropriately and the following procedure will be followed:

 

  • If a parent feels that he/she has a cause for complaint they should either speak to a qualified member of staff or the Nursery Manager.

 

  • Where the complaint is made to the staff, the Nursery Manager should be informed immediately.

 

  • The Nursery Manager will respond to any complaints as quickly as possible. They will talk with staff and parents to overcome the problem.
  • Complaints will be recorded and dated in the Complaints Book.
  • After the complaint has been resolved the final outcome will be written in the Complaints Book. Any recommendations for changes in procedure will be made and noted against the Complaints Policy.

 

  • It is clearly understood that parents have the right to phone the C.S.S.I.W after talking to the Nursery staff if they feel they have not received a satisfactory response to their complaint.

 

  • Complaints by a member of staff will be dealt with by the Nursery Manager immediately.

 

Complaints should be made to Nursery Manager or in her absence the Deputy Nursery Manager.


 

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES POLICY – Appendix C

This Policy covers the emergency procedures to follow in the event of accidents and emergencies.

This procedure has been discussed with all staff and volunteers, and on prominent display in the nursery is a document showing the names of our First Aiders, Fire Drill procedures, location of First Aid Boxes and Accident/Incident Books plus a list of emergency contact numbers which includes the local doctors’ surgery.

The premises are regularly inspected by The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and there are current certificates of inspection and maintenance of all fire alarms, smoke and heat detection systems and all fire extinguishers.

In the event of an emergency or accident, the Nursery Manager, or in her absence, the Deputy Nursery Manager, and Nursery Assistants will carry out the following:

  • Assess the situation and decide upon action to be taken.
  • Approach the situation with calm and speed.
  • The Nursery Manager, or Deputy Nursery Manager in her absence, will call the relevant Emergency Services if needed.
  • Ensure all children are safe, secure and reassured to avoid panic.
  • If an accident requires services of a First Aider, take control until a First Aider is present (though we have First Aiders in the nursery and also in the main administrative block of the building arrival should be immediate).
  • In the event that a disabled child is in the nursery at the time of an emergency/accident, the Nursery Manager or Deputy Nursery Manager in her absence will allocate a member of staff to look after that child.
  • Ensure the accident/incident is recorded in the Accident/Incident Book and signed by a parent/guardian or carer.
